Roodepoort Theatre
Roodepoort Theatre – Cultural Landmark in Florida Park
The Roodepoort Civic Theatre was founded in 1980 and began as a 328-seater auditorium with an 80-seater box theatre. Under the leadership of its first director, Weiss Doubell, it evolved into a producing theatre with its own production units – including the Pro Musica Orchestra, Opera Company, and Opera Chorus.
The theatre was later renamed the Pro Musica Theatre. Initially subsidised by the Roodepoort City Council (later the City of Johannesburg), the theatre also relied on sponsorships to fund audience development and major productions. By 2008, Pro Musica had presented over 400 opera performances and 500 symphony concerts, cementing its place in Johannesburg’s cultural heritage.
